The String is pulled down tight and the darkness is revealed, for
it is the weekend after Thanksgiving and our family traditions begin!
With a quick climb up the stairs and a flick of the switch, Christmas begins for the Cherry household, for its not about the shredding of wrapping paper Christmas morning, it is about this very point and everything in between. The first thing to be passed down to the small hands of the eager children is our beautiful pre-lit Christmas tree only to be followed by a few dusty, ragged, torn boxes! The rest can wait, as I carefully back down the thin, shallow stairs of the once dark and quite attic!

Now you can't forget mom, for she is doing the most important part of this glorious tradition back in the kitchen with her apron on and spoon in hand! The Cherry family can't put the Christmas tree up without Christmas music and a hot, steaming cup of wassle, which she makes using a recipe passed down from earlier generations.
With the kids help we get the tree up and fluffed and it looks flawless in its familiar place in front of the front door with the white lights glistening in the glass. While my son and I assemble the toy train that goes around the tree, mom slides over one of the dusty, ragged boxes. This is when the memories become full of life as the lid comes off and the beautiful shapes and colors are revealed. The smell of past Christmases fill the air as the tissue paper is carefully opened and all the glitter is exposed. Each ornament is inscribed with an engaging message and the date that this special memory originated from.
Stories are told as we take turns opening each one and reminisce about past occasions and the magnificent people that have been in our life's. It is one of the most special times in my life as I remember my late grandfather, Big Mac. The memories of him wearing his traditional red button down shirt, while as grandchildren, we would open up his ornaments personalized "Love Big Mac." This was a task of its own as he was known for using a role of tape on each package so you would have to use a knife just to get through the wrapping paper!
